Mountain Climbing Tours to the Rwenzori Mountains in Uganda.
Mount Rwenzori is located in western Uganda, on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Rwenzori is a local Rukonzo name that means Rain Creator, owing to the mountain’s permanent clouds.
It’s also known as the Cloud King. Rwenzori is located on the outskirts of the Albertine Rift Valley and features six unique peaks: Mount Stanley (5109m), Speke (4890m), Baker (4843m), Emin (4797m), Gessi (4715m), and Luigi da Savoia (4627m). At 5109 meters, Mount Stanley’s Margherita Peak is the highest point. Although being the third highest peak in Africa after Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Kenya, the Rwenzori Mountain Range is the highest Mountain Range in Africa.
Mountain Rwenzori, unlike the other main mountains in East Africa, is a block mountain produced by upward faulting of the Western Rift Valley floor. Ptolemy, an Alexandrine geographer, named it “the Mountains of the Moon” around 150 AD. On May 24, 1888, explorer Henry Stanley charted the Rwenzori and labeled it ‘Ruwenzori,’ a native name he documented as meaning the Rainmaker.
The Rwenzori Mountains National Park was designated a World Heritage Site in 1994 and a Ramsar site in 2008. Of the many hiking paths on this range’s different mountains, two major pathways go to the top. Beryl Park from Canada is the oldest person on record to have climbed to the pinnacle, Margherita on Mount Stanley, at 78 years old in November 2010. She set a global record as the oldest female to successfully ascend Mount Rwenzori’s Margherita peak.
The Kilembe Trail, also known as the Kilembe trailhead route, is located near Kasese town and is the most picturesque and compelling path, passing mostly via Mount Baker.
The walk begins in Kilembe (1,450 meters). You may trek to the top for roughly 7 days, including the descent, or you can only experience the Rwenzoris inside the stunning heather zone for a 3-day hike. The Kilembe trail ascends through the Nyamwamba valley through multiple glacial lakes and excellent panoramas before reaching Lake Kitandara on the Rwenzori’s southern slopes. Treks to Mount Baker are picturesque and worthwhile.
The Central Circuit trail is the most difficult route and begins at the Mihunga trailhead. It is a seven-day round trek through the Bujuku valley along the slope of the spectacular Rwenzoris. Ascending through the Nyabitaba is required for acclimatization before reaching the snow-capped peak at 5109 meters above sea level.

Before reaching the summit, you will go through the Podocarpus forest, through the hot springs, and the caldera.
All of these trails allow you to visit the diverse vegetation zones, the lowest of which is covered with dense montane forest and regenerating woods embellished with lianas, epiphytes, and lichens, which gives way to the bamboo forest, followed by groves of enormous heather. The slope gradually breaks up into moorland, studded with bizarre shapes of enormous lobelias and groundsels.
