How to get to lake mburo national park

Lake Mburo National Park is located in the western part of Uganda in Mbarara district. It is the smallest savannah national park in Uganda covering a radius of only 370 square kilometers. The national park is home to about 350 bird species, as well as other wildlife animals such as; zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, oribis, Defassa waterbuck, leopard, hippo, hyena, topi and reed buck among others.

Lake Mburo National Park in Uganda has a total of 13 lakes with Lake Mburo being the most popular and frequently accessed lake in the national park. Visitors travelling to the national park can take 3 and a half hours to reach the park from Kampala city.

Accessing Lake Mburo National Park by Road

The 228 kilometer drive to the Park from Kampala takes about 3½ hours. Travelers can access the national park from either of the three entrance gates at the park which include; the Kyanyanshara Gate, Sanga Gate and finally the Nshara Gate.

The Kyanyanshara Gate lies close to the famous and luxurious Mihingo Lodge. It is situated just 18 kilometers south of Akagate Trading Centre, which is 14 kilometers west of Lyantonde.

Alternatively, travelers can use the 9 kilometer dirt road which leads to the Nshara Gate. This road turns south from the main road, about 500 meters west of Akagate Trading Centre.

Visitors can also use the Sanga Gate to access Lake Mburo Park. Simply take the 13 kilometer dirt road from the main road at Sanga Trading Center to Sanga Gate. Sanga trading center lies 13 kilometers from Akagate trading center and 27 kilometers from Lyantonde.

Lake Mburo National Park in Uganda can also be accessed by visitors travelling from Kibale National Park via Ibanda and Rushere. Traveling to Lake Mburo  park from Kibale can take about 3½ hours. This is convenient for visitors who wish to visit the national park after a chimpanzee trekking tour in Kibale National Park.

Travelers can also access the Park from Queen Elizabeth National Park via Ishaka and Mbarara, taking approximately 2½ to 3½ hours and covering a distance of about 186 kilometers.

Visitors can also access Lake Mburo Park by air.
