Detailed Itinerary for 7 Days Rwanda Adventure Safari

Day 1: Kigali City Tour and Transfer to Akagera National Park

Your driver guide will pick you up from your hotel in Kigali and drive to Akagera National Park. Upon your arrival in the park, you will embark on a full-day game drive in the park. Look out for wildlife such as the Sitatunga, giraffes, zebras, elephants, and antelopes, among others.

Drive back to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 2: Morning Game Drive and Sunset Boat Cruise on Lake Ihema

Get up early in the morning and head out for a morning game drive in the park. Explore the northern part of the park, which is rich in wildlife with great opportunities to sight the Big Five, including the lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant, and rhino. Have lunch and relax in the afternoon. Later in the evening, head out for a sunset boat cruise on Lake Ihema, with a chance to see hippos, Nile crocodiles, and a variety of bird species and wildlife around the lake area. Dinner and overnight stay at your lodge.

Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, you will drive to Volcanoes National Park. Enjoy the breathtaking view of hills and misty valleys as you drive through the countryside and local communities. Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda is one of the only three natural habitats for the mountain gorilla species; the others being Bwindi Impenetrable and Mgahinga Gorilla National Parks in Uganda and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Check into your lodge upon arrival and spend your evening relaxing at leisure. Dinner will be served at your lodge.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking and Ibyi’wacu Village Tour

Start your morning with breakfast, then drive to the park headquarters for your briefing. You will be tracking mountain gorillas today, an activity which can take between 1 and 6 hours depending on the location of the gorilla family you are tracking. After your lunch, head for a cultural tour of Ibyi’wacu village, located just outside the park. Enjoy your time interacting with the locals and learning more about the community and the culture.

Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 5: Transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park

After breakfast, proceed with your drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park, with a stopover for lunch and another at the Gisakura tea estate. Take a tour of the vast tea plantation and processing factory before winding up your tour with a hot cup of tea. Don’t feel shy to purchase a couple of tea packets in support of the local community. Dinner will be served at your lodge or hotel.

Day 6: Chimpanzee Trekking and Canopy Walk

Wake up early in the morning and have breakfast. You will drive to the park’s briefing point in time to register and receive your briefing from the park warden. Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe forest begins at 5 am and lasts between 3-6 hours or more, depending on their location. You will also get a chance to embark on the 2-hour canopy walk where you will have a chance to explore the canopy walkway bridge and have a 360 view of the forest canopy among other sightings.

Day 7: Drive to Kigali and Departure- Stopover at King’s Palace Nyanza

Have your breakfast early in the morning before checking out of your lodge or hotel. You will start your journey back to Kigali with a stopover at the former King’s palace in Nyanza, where you will take a tour of the palace, learn more about Rwanda’s cultural heritage, and also spend time with the famous Inyambo long-horned cattle. Have lunch and proceed to Kigali, where you will be dropped off at a hotel of your choice or at Kigali International Airport, as you will advise.
